The movie has Ulaganayagan KAMAL in 10 different roles. This is the first time ever in world cinema that an actor plays 10 different roles in a film.Whether you like the movie or not, offcourse you juz cant ignore it. The same also goes for the Ulaganayagan...its impossible to ignore!!(Mayb u cn b a rajini fan or nytin...u juz cnt!!) Watching Kamal's commitment and creativity in this movie I juz have one thing to say, there is no comparison to Him...He offcourse is the God of cinema...Oh yes, am a fan of Kamalji(A happy note: ma whole family is!!:)) bt then this review of the movie is not a biased one...I swear!!The movie is a feast for all those movie freaks out there. Kamalji and K.S.Ravikumar and their team are taking us on a roller-coaster ride. Oh, one more time Kamalji dares to be different.
The movie begins with a trip to the 12th century and this first 15 minutes is in itself a movie in equity to a 2 and a half one!! The most beautiful part of the Dasavatharam is the first 15 min I shud say. It has kamal playing the role of Nambi, a vaishnavite, being destroyed by the chozha king, a saivite. Aftr that we are brought back to the present century in America. The movie is basically about a deadly virus(bio weapon) that could destroy the world. An Indian scientist (char called Govind played by Kamal without any spl make-up!!) wants to prevent it from getting into the hands of the villian(char called Christian Fletcher again played by Kamal himself). Somehow the virus gets transported to India where again the scientist and the villain tries to find the virus.

Kamal also plays the role of the police officer Balram Naidu. He has got a funny Tamil accent, walking style, even his ring-tone makes us laugh like anytin. The 7 foot tall muslim character with all his innocence and good nature needs special mention. Also the bold and brave social activist role(Vincent poovaragan) who dies bitterly in the Tsunami while trying to save his enemy's son has been interestingly crafted that nearly leads to another special story. Ma fav is the 95 year old lady role awesome one who is being called mentally disabled by her family members. Be it the way she scolds using words like kadangara, Brahmahathi or hw she locks herself inside the cupboard or hw she calls a walkie-talkie a veengi pona cellphone [;)] or the way she grieves the loss of her son its juz wonderful!! The efforts of wearing makeup and changing the voice to an old lady's has been paid off well. The last part of the mukhunda mukhunda song has this old lady sing in remembrance of her dead son. That part has been sung by Kamalji himself in a old lady's voice.
Then Kamal can be seen in a Japanese martial arts expert role who wants to take revenge for the death of his sister. The climax has an action sequence between Fletcher and the Japanese(both played by Kamal) yet another unforgettable scene. The George Bush role is portrayed like a comedian. The scene where he questions abt NaCl is a bigtime comedy.A Punjabi Singh role called Avatar Singh who can talk as well as sing in tamil calls TamilNadu a temple in the movie. Its just a small part but still instills a lot of positive hope. Jayapradha pairs Kamal in this role.
Kamalji has handled each role differently and uniquely from the voice modulation to the body language and walking style, special mention- the badguy Fletcher's role, I juz loved the walking style, attitude and the bachground music that accompanies...juz terrific!! Am juz short of adjectives to praise Kamalji for all his efforts, his dedication, his hardwork, his intelligence, his everytin...(Ulaga Nayagane...Oscar um dooram ilai..!!) We usually feel happy seeing a single Kamal performing in a scene then juz think hw it wud b to c 4 Kamals in a scene in diff getups and wonderful performances...its a treat to the eyes!! He dares to try his hand in everytin that too differntly and bounces back each time with something new for us to enjoy. Kamal is a perfectionist in everytin he does(These are the exact words of director Maniratnam abt our Ulaga Nayagan!!)
The cinematography was perfect also the editing part- no loose ends! The female lead is Asin, has done justice to her part. Her efforts to dub in her own voice(she has got to talk this Iyengar language!!) has to be appreciated.Mallika Sherawat was just ok. Special mention to the make-up artist from Hollywood, Michael Westmore has done wonders.Devi Sri Prasad's BGM score is really good. The music is composed by Himesh Reshamiya. The pick of the album is Oh Oh Sanam sung by Kamal himself nd the classical Mukhunda Mukhunda by Sadhana Sargam. Kallai matum kandal song sung by Hariharan has beautiful lyrics penned by Vaali. And offcourse the last song UlagaNayagane for which we find the director himself dancing is an awesome one(fav of all die-hard Kamal fans) penned by Vairamuthu(in all praise for Kamalji!!)
Inshort, the movie is a scientific thriller that has been beautifully crafted in Hollywood style but still is culture-specific. This movie has the seed to take Indian cinema to its next level mentioned K.S.Ravikumar in an interview. Damn sure the movie is a blockbuster...!!:) and I obviously LOVED it!!:):)
